The right concept, in the right place, built to thrive.
Gatherworks partners with developers and creators to turn their passion and bold ideas into thriving, magnetic spaces—matching the right concept to the right location, guiding buildouts and permitting, and backing established and emerging talent with the structures they need to grow. From pop-ups to food halls to fIne-dining to entertainment spaces, its placemaking that delivers.
Passion only works with a plan. We’re here for both.
Ben McDonald, Founder
I grew up in a food family. My mom’s side is packed with gifted home cooks. My Parisian grandfather, once the pastry chef at the U.S.’s first Michelin-starred restaurant, owned Baltimore’s beloved Bonjour Bakery. And my father owned restaurants, including the award-winning Brass Elephant. Food wasn’t just on our tables—it’s in my DNA.
I began apprenticing with my grandfather as a teenager, igniting a deep love of cooking. I spent hours experimenting, reading, and watching YouTube cooking videos, and eventually started working in restaurant kitchens. At the same time, my interest in real estate was quietly growing. In 2012, I met Thibault Manekin of Seawall Development—the visionary developers behind Remington’s revival—who gave me a start as an intern. I learned from the ground up, working on townhouse renovations and special projects.
I thought I’d stay in the food business full-time, with long stretches at Bonjour, Baltimore restaurants, and my own pop-ups—but I was always pulled toward the intersection of food and place. Eventually, I returned to Seawall to work on F&B and retail projects like Lexington Market, Doppio, The Charmers Club, House 28 Matcha, the operations at R. House, and others still in the works.
Gatherworks is the culmination of my journey. Now, I’m taking what I’ve learned beyond Remington—partnering with developers, food entrepreneurs, and economic leaders to bring built environments to life through the power of gathering. I know that the right concepts, in the right place, can transform neighborhoods, creating places where people love to live, work and gather. I look forward to bringing your space to life.

How we can help
Developers
Gatherworks partners with developers to activate commercial spaces through food, beverage, and cultural concepts that draw people in and bring neighborhoods to life. From site assessment and concept matching to vendor recruitment and negotiation, I help ensure your spaces aren’t just leased—they’re loved. I bring a deep understanding of what makes a space work operationally and emotionally. The result: distinctive, high-performing spaces that elevate your portfolio and community impact.
Entrepreneurs
Gatherworks helps food, beverage and retail creators take the leap from great idea to thriving business. Whether you’re launching your first pop-up or scaling into a permanent location, I offer strategic guidance on location selection, permitting, business structure, and landlord relationships. I understand both the creative and operational sides of F&B because I’ve been in your shoes—from apprenticing in kitchens to running my own concepts. I’ll let you focus on what you do best, while building a foundation for long-term success.
Economic Developers
Gatherworks supports economic development leaders in shaping vibrant local ecosystems through food and hospitality. I work alongside city and nonprofit partners to connect the dots between spaces, community needs, and F&B entrepreneurs. My approach helps attract small business owners, foster local entrepreneurship, and anchor public spaces with authentic gathering places. Whether you're revitalizing a market, launching a culinary incubator, or strengthening a commercial corridor, I bring the experience and relationships to deliver inclusive, place-based outcomes.
Make it stand out.
